Overview of Programs
At Gateway Montessori, we believe that by fostering independence through joyful and purposeful activity, we encourage the development of self-esteem, creativity, and an enthusiasm for learning. Dr. Montessori’s theory of educating children is based upon the following elements.
- “The Prepared Environment,” a classroom that is carefully designed to invite the child to not only explore the academic materials, but also, the social climate.
- The Directress, or teacher, acts as a role model, a guide and an observer. Lessons are presented individually or in small groups, allowing better understanding of each child’s learning style and the identification of individual strengths and talents.
- Montessori Materials - these specifically designed academic materials providing instruction that move from the concrete to the abstract, are self correcting, and employ a multisensory approach.
- Respect for the child - in a Montessori classroom, the child is always working on the adult he is to become. Children are encouraged to solve problems for themselves. Mistakes are not really failures, but stepping stones to the proper solution and, ultimately the development of self-esteem. This combined with a focus on the rights of others helps the child to develop in a positive way.
Our Montessori programs range from infancy to 6 years of age. The programs include an Infant/Young Toddler class (3 months to 18 months) as well as our original Montessori Toddler class (18 months to 3 years). Our primary program is designed for 3 to 6 year olds, while the Extended Day or afternoon program, is designed to serve the needs of students who are 4 ½ years or older and are developmentally ready for Pre-K or Kindergarten. We also offer a new Young Primary Extended Day program for 3 & 4 year-olds who do not require a nap and are not ready for the Pre-K program. We also provide music and Spanish classes twice per week for all of our programs.
